Superconducting Coils
The Technology
Extremely Ingenious Engineering high voltage technology is based on novel resonant
transformers. To improve the performance of these devices, we explore the use of high
temperature superconducting materials. Use of these materials would pose several advantages
and improve the transformer efficiency.
Background
A high voltage is generated through use of novel Resonant Transformers. These transformers are
a centerpiece of EIE technology.
Recent advances in the construction of wire and coils using the Bismuth Strontium Calcium
Copper oxide materials make the construction of resonant transformers that operate at 77 K,
which is at or below many common industrial cooling gases such as liquid nitrogen. These
materials are in the class of High Temperature Superconductors’ or HTS.
Use of the HTS materials enable higher core field intensities at lower powers, making many EIE
devices more efficient.
Application
We envision applying the HTS materials to our resonant transformers to make them more
compact. Since higher field intensities can be achieved at lower power, heat considerations
which limit coil construction are mitigated.
We are excited to use this nascent HTS material technology in our applications and plan a
growing program of research for application this coming year.
